Portrait Location:
New Haven Green A12

Current occupation: Barista and café manager

Arrival in the US: 2017

Reason for migration: My husband and I had to leave the country because we opposed the current government and we were having trouble with people that support that government.  I had become pregnant and was afraid they might make me lose my baby.

Commentary: When I lived in Venezuela, I was a medical laboratory scientist.  I had a job in a hospital but I lost it because I didn’t support the government and participated in protests.  I came to the United States for the medicine I needed to safely complete my pregnancy. I love my baby so much.  Every time we have a problem or something is not going the way we want, my husband and I say, “Okay, we’re doing this for him, so let’s keep going.”  I don’t think he deserves to live in a place where people have no rights, where you don’t even have a place to stay safely because someone could kill you for your cell phone or your shoes.
